Throughout history, ceremony and ritual have played an important role in our lives. Reminding us of our deep roots in the earth experience and providing an opportunity to remember our commitment and responsibility to sustain interdependence.   Ceremony and ritual is an offering of reverence for all we are given to survive and a reminder that our very existence is reliant on the gifts of life, and thus, we give back.  Our efforts and the fruits of our efforts are not for us to reap the benefits of, but rather to support the integrity of the whole.  Our lives are built on an intricate web of integrity and we contribute to that integrity by being all of who we are. There is a popular sanskrit invokation prayer reminding us that or relationship with all beings and things should be mutually beneficial if we ourselves desire happiness and liberation from suffering.

Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu
May all beings everywhere be happy healthy and free.  May the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness, health and to that freedom for all.

Trusting and attuning to that which is greater than ourselves allows the cosmology of the Universe to navigate the overall harmony of our existence.  Being human is not about being supreme over creation, it’s about being one with creation.  Ceremony and ritual is a way to unite what we sometimes perceive as separate.  It is about communion. Communicating and participating as if we are one. Because, in fact, we are.
